It works on 3.23, even (not sure why or how, exactly, but it throws no
errors). This is another case where I'd *really* rather disable this for
the smallest number of cases possible. Maybe some kind of a config flag for
really old dbs?

Conditionally is still better than turning it off for everyone, so can we go
with that until there's a better solution?
