Take a look and see what I just committed.  I think this is what Jan was
shooting for.  I decided to use "tie to" as the description - if we want to
change it later that is fine.  It seems to work for me, but I only ran it
through a limited number of cases.  Definitley will need some help
documentation for this stuff.
