[dev] DIMP - changing 'delete' behaviour

Ah, one of those 'we really should do this' defects it looks like. I  
agree this is a good idea, alas, I haven't got the time to take  
something like that on...

Nope.  This needs to be implemented instead as a general purpose solution:
