[gollem] PATCH: visual separation between backends

I'm actually pretty unhappy with the multiple backend display; it doesn't seem
useable to me. I'd much rather we had a way of opening one backend in a frame,
and a second backend in a frame next to (instead of on top of) the first one.
No need to display everything, etc. So I'm not so keen on putting much work
into the current multiple backends look/code.
