I had the same problem a few months ago on a Centos5 server and tried 
everything I could think of.
Upgrading pear, php, apache, ...
A Fedora server didn't had the problem with the same ftp server.
I posted an error report, but that was closed.
Eventually I switched it over to a smb backend and didn't have any 
problems anymore.
