Install on hosted server PLEASE HELP!

Similar to what Justin Zachor enquired in a previous message I am trying to install horde on a hosted server.

My only prob is that I have PHP4.0.6 and cannot get my ISP to upgrade.

Someone replied saying that "for PEAR, if you can set a .htaccess file 
which sets your own include_path, you can point to a PEAR installation 
anywhere."

I can set up .htaccess files but can you please tell me exactly how to do this.
