You have it set up to use IMP authentication, actually. Which is fine, but 
it means you should be looking at the IMP servers.php and conf.php files 
to make sure the login paramters are correct.

Do you have anything in your IMAP server logs from when you try logging 
in? Or do you not see any connections at all? How have you configured 
imp/config/servers.php?

And root is a valid IMAP account for you?
