Um, try turning off some stuff on your *NIX install, like setting it to 
boot to shell instead of X, etc.

If you're thinking of upgrading the system, see if you can build/buy a 
really low-end Duron system, throw in a 7200rpm HD drive and 256meg of RAM, 
then you'll have a pretty zippy server.  Also, with this you can them 
upgrade it to 2ghz + more RAM if you ever need to.
