[horde] login not authenticated

Hi,
I'm not getting a connection to horde or imp. 
I've tried using mysql (in horde.php), plus tried commenting it out & using 
IMP authentication in registry.php. Neither works (yet)!

test.php reveals no missing or broken components to horde:

The imp/test.php returns a valid connection to a remote mailbox 
server="mail.hedge-analytics.com" user="xxxxxx" 
mailbox="{mail.hedge-analytics.com:143}INBOX"
INBOX has 0 messages (0 new 0 recent)

but imp/test.php returns the following error on connecting to my own local 
box:

mail.hedge-analytics.co.uk Notice: Server disables LOGIN, no recognized SASL 
authenticator (errflg=2) in Unknown on line 0

I can't guess what SASL means! The fact I can't get into horde or imp suggests 
something pretty basic is missing. 

Any thoughts?
