and did you set these in horde/config/conf.php:

[sql][phptype]='mysql'
[sql][protocol]='tcp'               (MY values!)
[sql][socket]='/var/liv/mysql/mysql.sock'

? 

if it doesn't try to use sql at all!(maybe?)
