[horde] Horde installation and php-xml support

I recently found horde/imp on an isp site (ipower) and found it 
wonderful.  The app looks great.  I am trying to get it working on our 
company's server, and am having trouble.

First of all, the server is a mandrake linux 9 box.  PHP is version 
4.2.3 (apache 1.3.26).  I went to the PEAR site and did the little 
web-based install, and it is supposedly installed.  My problem is that 
IMP says xml support isn't present.

I installed expat and all the xml rpm's from the mandrake 9 cd.  That 
didn't fix the problem.  I would compile php, but that is over my head 
at the moment, and the server in question is a production machine, so if 
I screw up php I'm in trouble.

Do I have to recompile php, or is there a way to get xml working for 
horde another way?  Mandrake seems to have provided binaries by means of 
rpm that I would think would work.  I can't seem to find any answer on 
your site or on the web.  We've been looking for a good webmail app, and 
horde looks very capable.  What can I do to make this work?
