[horde] Trying to decide if I should use Horde and Imp

The documentation of horde is included in the specific modules. Every module has
it's own subdirectory named docs. I'm sure this will help a long way. You can
browse the modules online with the webcvs on horde.org to read the docs with
your browser.

I cannot tell you if Windows is a reliable system for horde. I don't want to say
windows is bad and such silly statements. I don't like it, but that's my
problem. So I want to think about this from a neutral point of view. My
thoughts are: Apache was developed on unix and ported to windows. Compatibility
doesn't have to be 100%. I know this from perl...

The same goes for PHP and even for Horde. Both is developed on linux primarily
and I read many posts in many forums that there are lots of possibilities that
some php code will fail entirely on windows while running fine on linux. Only
think of paths and so on.

I know that Horde devs are doing a hard job in writing Horde platform
independent. But there are many contact points from the php code through all
the pieces of software down to the system where this may break (perhaps only in
the future after an minor update).

Well, installing and configuring Horde can be some kind of tricky IMHO. Only if
you have in deep knowledge of the underlying technologies like apache, php and
your IMAP server, then you can configure Horde without problems. But if you
have to learn the secret tricks of apache and PHP and Horde all at the same
time then it's difficult. And whe some problems with windows specific options
are added to this mixture, then all could blow up rather easy...

Well I know that the apache people say that apache for windows does not perform
as fast and stable like on unices. If the apache dev's say such words then this
has to be a fact.

And on the other hand, apache, php, mysql and horde don't need a killer machine,
especially in an experimental environment. So i would do this:

Use a test machine running linux to get the feeling for apache, php, mysql and
horde and if you have managed all the problems here (like max execution time,
upload limits, session handlers, memory limits etc. pp. and so on), then try to
move it to windows platform if you need and want to.

Hope that I could help with these private opinions.

Greets,
Daniel
