[horde] Connect to mySQL tables?

I'm not sure what you think Turba is, but it sounds like you're a bit  
confused. Turba _does_ talk directly to SQL. You can create your own  
address book source by creating a new entry (or customizing an  
existing one) in turba/config/sources.php.
