[horde] $prefs in postauth hook?

Is is possible to modify the prefs of a user in the postauth hook?

I am using a mysql pref engine. In the postauth hook i grab the global  
$pref object. I can getValue fine but when i to change things like  
setValue or setLocked the changes don't seem to take affect.

I have resorted to writing directly to the mysql horde_prefs tables -  
is there another way to do this? Why i can't i use the gloabl $prefs  
object?
