OK, I can work around the LDAP lookups and even the FTP access.  My 
biggest concern was that the end-user needed to use the internal horde 
name (uidNumber, in our case) to add an individual to their shares. 
That struck me as counter-intuitive and might actually cause me to scrap 
my _username_*_backend_hook plans.  I guess I expected horde to use the 
end-user-provided login names to access _anything_ outside horde.

Luckily, we are still in the testing phases of our horde implementation, 
so we are not constrained by any installed base.
