[horde] Horde login and german umlauts

Hi,

I run Horde Groupware Webmail Edition 1.2 (horde 3.3) on a red hat
enterprise linux 5.2 (php 5.1.6, httpd 2.2.3) and local useraccounts
(passwd/shadow).

Users with german umlauts in the password can't login at the webfrontend.

So I think that this may be a problem with encoding ... but where?
Browser, webserver, database, ...

Any hints to how tos or a solution/bugfix/workaround?
