No, either the groupware edition or the webmail edition is fine, as it
has a lot of add-ons installed and all prerequisites already included.

No, just the latter is fine.

That should be fine.
One thing though, make sure you fill in the "administrator accounts"
field in the horde configuration (horde/config/conf.php):
$conf['auth']['admins'] = array('tom');
Make sure this is replaced with whatever username you log in as (using
imp). I suspect that that was one point that was missing in your setup.
