Just to correct / complain:
With "binary distribution" i mean typical distributions (like RedHat, Debian, CentOS or even SuSe) where the package management mainly uses binary packages (even if some of them are build from a source or a "source package" by the user). Typical "source" distributions are Gentoo Linux or *BSDs if the user uses sources to build all the software / applications.
I 'mainly' saw segfaults within LAMP / PHP on binary distributions - i assume that their binary package manager is not able to to solve / recognize binary incompatibilities if a user uses binary packages from different sources (or in some cases different - but "officially compatible" - but i.e. in practice incompatible compiler options / versions where the PHP system seems to be very sensible against) versions.
But even within distributor's only packages this might happen - at least seen this on a CentOS after a system update (incl. PHP) against official / "stable" CentOS repositories. May be that 'enterprise versions' like REHEL or SLE are "less affected".
On "source" distributions (by this definition - which we mainly use byself) i didn't see any segfault within a LAMP yet over years.
Cheers,
Niels.
