You might take a look at PDF thumbnails with Ghostscript and ImageMagick 
(which are generating PNGs of your PDF pages for "preview"). May be this is 
what you are looking for...

But be aware that Ghostscript is a typical vulnerability if runned in 
(especially internet) webmail applications.
