Dear Stephen,

it is generally no good idea to use mailboxes by POP3 in ashared manner - and a more bad idea to use a postbox with IMAP AND POP3 (except some special cases).

POP3 is by principe a VERY (!) simple protocol - just developed for transferring mails from a postbox to a user. There is no need for an POP3 server to implement markings like "new" or something like that, because all POP3 fetched post is typically "new". But yes, there are mailers out wich offers some "IMAP-typical features" within POP3, but this is not a must and did not work properly in shared client environments.

Try to use horde in IMAP. If peoples are fetching their postbox content by POP3 typically the Inbox content is gone or marked as read by the POP3/IMAP Server.

Another thing is that POP3 access locks the whole mailbox against parallel access as long as connected.

For hard parallel usage (with most email features working properly) it is highly (!) recommended tto you or your users to use IMAP on all clients. If not be aware of the limits along with it.

Good luck,

Niels.
