Yes, bindas 'admin' is set:
$conf['ldap']['bindas'] = 'admin';

Actually, after I wrote the previous post, I also had some "glimpses" of working, but no more than few clicks away, and then it crashed again. Then once or twice login page reappeared, and crashed after trying to log in.
