Thank you Robert. I found a previous post (just earlier to this one) that explained how to add another locale to Ubuntu. I have made these changes and restarted the servers. However, this did not work. I followed these steps:
opened /var/lib/locales/supported.d/local and added:
"en_US.ISO-8859-1 ISO-8859-1"
Performed a "sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales"
Updated the /etc/default/local file to show "en_US" instead of "en_US.UTF-8"
Restarted the servers
However, this didn't correct the problem - and Firefox 10 still does not show the contents of the e-mail in the reading pane in Horde 3.
I installed Horde 4 - and all e-mails show in the reading pane normally - so this seems to only affected Horde 3 and Dynamic Mail. But I have some other issues with Horde 4 not working right and I've never been able to get it to work properly. I used the webmail install instructions (http://www.horde.org/apps/webmail/docs/INSTALL) and set it up in a separate PEAR installation.
