[horde] Mail from Gmail IMAP server not loading

We've got the horde application set up to use a Gmail IMAP server. I can
now log in to one of many email accounts using the horde webmail scripts.
It connects and all of the folder structure that is on Gmail is transferred
and displayed correctly however there are no actual folder contents moved.
The number of emails in said folders is shown but there is no
mail accessible. The little "busy" gif is going round and round for ever
but nothing happens. This behavior is the same on other browsers and all
email accounts that I've tried.
