This (including the wiki) explains a behaviour I had also seen, ie
that deletions on the AS device seemed to sync up, but deletions on
imp didn't sync down (ie I hadn't "purged").
If anybody is interested, setting imp to use a trash mailbox seems to
correctly simulate the behaviour of an Exchange server. That is to
say that it causes messages deleted in imp to be deleted (removed)
from the AS device at the next refresh (according to the rules
described above).
