Just for the records (list archives) I tracked it down to my 
prefs.local.php file, I had forgotten the <?php tag at the top of the file.
Strangely enough I there were no parsing errors logged by PHP nor could 
I find the file context on the generated pages anywhere (assuming it 
would have included the file contents as straight HTML code without the 
tag).
