Hi Michael

Googleing "horde force install pear" does not give me many meaningful results.

The most meaningful one is this one:

However, I'm not sure it's the same problem.  If you recall my initial
description of the problem was that everything was working fine until
I didn't change the horde/config/conf.php because I wanted to try and
ascertain what exactly had been added or removed.  The last time I had
this problem it proved to be that in copying the generated config to
the conf.php vim had commented every single line (Google), but this is
not the case now.

Having said that I've run:
 /usr/share/horde-beta/pear/pear -c /usr/share/horde-beta/pear.conf
upgrade -f  -c horde

This has resulted in an message that I need to re-run horde_role...
/usr/share/horde-beta/pear/pear -c /usr/share/horde-beta/pear.conf
run-scripts horde/Horde_Role

But after filling in the filesystem location it exits cleanly, but
there is no change to my problem.  Until I correct the .htaccess, I
have a blank screen.

and afterwards I have:

A fatal error has occurred

Horde_Auth: Class definition of not found.

Details have been logged for the administrator.

I have no error of any sort in the horde.log and only this in the apache log.

I feel I haven't understood your call to force install pear (in fact,
I read botched pear install to mean that pear itself is screwed.  But
I see no results for fixing that in the list archives).
