I think michael's point is he does not know for sure if there is
anything already in the new master code which breaks on PHP 5.3

@Neal: I will be on holiday next week. Can you please install a git
developer checkout of "master" on the staging system and try if all
basic operations (email, calendaring) still work? You can ask some
trainees to assist you. The staging system should be on a PHP version of
5.3.

You can temporarily change the apache vhost to point to the git checkout
version. Maybe Diana can help you with the setup if required.
