[i18n] problems with translation.php

You have a gettext version that doesn't support PHP natively. What you see
is a side effect that happens if use translation.php with an old gettext
version.
I _think_ 0.11.5 has PHP support, but I'm not quite sure, you might need to
get gettext from CVS.
