spell check and ldap problems

[Riot Act]

I have two different problems when running IMP.

1) The spell check function does not return any errors in email that 
contains misspelled content.

2) I get the following error when trying to use the LDAP search feature.  
"Fatal error: Call to unsupported or undefined function ldap_connect() in 
/usr/share/horde/imp/ldap.search.php3 on line 238."

I am running fresh installation of...

Debian Linux 2.2.17
Apache-SSL 1.3.12.2+1
Ispell 3.1.20-14 (permissions on ispell are -rwxr-xr-x)
Wv 0.6.0-1
PostgreSQL 7.0.2-6
PHP3 3.0.17-1
Horde 1.2.3-6
IMP 2.2.3-7

Everything else in IMP works great! :-) I haven't touched any of the config 
files so I am not sure what is gumming up the works on either issue.  I have 
even gone as far as completely uninstalling and reinstalling IMP and Horde 
to make sure the config files are on the level.  Has anyone run into and 
fixed either of these problems?
