The FAQ refers to 2.2; I can see how the answer to that question isn't
particularly useful unless you already *know* the answer, and I'll
change it momentarily.

Before I do: The things that can be inlined in IMP are things which we
can send to a browser to display in an HTML page. Remember, the
message-reading window is of type text/html right from the
beginning. If we want to send text, then we make sure that line
endings are <br> and send it along. If we want to send HTML, we strip
out the scripty bits and send it along. Theoretically, if we wanted to
send, say, TeX, we could send it to TeX2HTML and then send it along.

But when all you have is image data, you can't just send it along; to
display an image in an HTML page, the image has to be created as a
file somewhere on the webserver, and then an <IMG> tag sent along to
the browser. That functionality is not present in 2.2, and that's why
images can't be inlined.

Hey, a pre-alpha at alpha quality is a good thing, we're ahead of the
game! Seriously, 2.3 works pretty well, the problem is that it's a
moving target still, and that might not be best for the users
(although some sites have it in production currently).
