Thank you for your reply.  Yes, I have shift-reloaded, emptied the
cache manually, the whole 9 yards with no effect.  Also, I I manually
run the script through PHP at the command line, I get the same
output.

How about a stupid answer for a sensible question: 
Did you try hitting "shift reload" on your browser and/or clear the
cache?
