user quotas and imap behaviour

Hi!
We are experiencing a strange behaviour with our UW-IMAP server in
combination with IMP (and Netscape Messenger) It is not an IMP's fault,
but maybe you could give some advice.
The situation is as follows. We have a quota of 1mb for our users in the
mail spool in /var/spool/mail, and then 5mb in their home dir. Whenever
they want to read the messages, with IMP or NS Messenger, the imap
server tries to move the messages from the spool to their home. If this
move succeeds, no problem, but when they haven't got enough space left
to move all the new mail to their home, the operation fails with a "disk
quota exceeded" error (logical). But then, neither IMP nor Messenger
display the messages in the inbox (as if it was empty), and I've been
told in the uw-imap mailing list that this is the client's fault.
And I think it is, because if you telnet directly to the port, you can
see the list of the inbox and get messages from the inbox even though
the quota is exceeded by issuing the correct imap comamnds.
Is there something IMP could do to solve that?
My thanks in advance.
