I'd like to suggest an alternative the theme of this
thread:
1. Allow the user to identify a folder that is to be
considered by IMP to be the trash folder (set in
preferences).
3. Create a menu option to "Empty the trash".
3. Allow user to set up filters for incoming messages,
based on header items, subject line, and perhaps
contents. Allow the filter to take specific action on
matches ("move to trash", "move to <user-specified
folder>", yada, yada, yada). (Did I see someone say
that this is already in 2.3?)
4. When a message is deleted, move it to the trash
folder rather than simply marking it for deletion and
requiring the expunge-step. (This is a pet-peeve of
mine regarding IMP!)
Implementing 1 through 3 would solve the problem for
the user that started this thread. IMHO, it is both a
more elegant solution than a "delete all contents of
folder x" function, and opens up the doors for
expanded usability like anti-spamming, auto-routing of
IMP list messages ;) and the implementation of item 4.
above (I just HATE the delete-&-expunge two-step!)
These aren't my ideas; many mail clients work like
this (Netscape, Eudora, Outlook, HotMail, Yahoo
mail...). It is a method that works, and works well.
