muliple imap server connections

I'm having trouble connecting to a local imap server. I am able to connect
successfully to two others, but can't get the third to work.

All three are running UW imap-2000.RELEASE-CANDIDATE.7. The two that work
are Linux boxes, the one that doesn't is Compaq Tru64 UNIX V5.0. Imp 2.2.3
is running on one of the Linux servers.

If I telnet to port 143 on the working servers, I get this:
* OK server.name IMAP4rev1 2000.281 at Tue, 20 Feb 2001 13:16:09 -0600
(CST)

on the non-working server, I get this:
* PREAUTH server.name IMAP4rev1 2000.281 at Tue, 20 Feb 2001 13:16:17
-0600 (CST)

If I run imapd from the system prompt on all three, I get the PREAUTH
message.

Any ideas on what I need to do to make successful connections to the Unix
server?
