mime types - everything application/octet-stream?

i have noticed that no matter what i attach when composing a note with imp it is
created as mime type 'application/octet-stream'.

Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="china.html"
Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="BOOTLOG.TXT"
Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="MONKEYS_.JPG"
Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="gunpoll.jpg"

is this a configurational issue or does imp only differentiate mime types when
*reading* mail?
