Strange mail sending problem (it's not)

My path to sendmail is correct. I know sendmail works when piped an
email. Neither apache via logs nor imp via netscape are dropping any
errors. When I attempt to either send a message or save a draft of a
message the page is reloaded with a now blank compose page, except for a
filled in from address. No mail is ever sent, and it doesn't look like a
draft is saved. 

I'm not using folders, so imp shouldn't be trying to save anything and
failing before sending the message.

Any idea what's broken here?
