Faster overall? Maybe. Probably not faster to execute - with smtp you need
to block through the whole conversation; when you're calling sendmail on the
command line you just dump the message off.

Also, calling sendmail gives you redundancy; it'll take care of retries,
etc., if the smtp server is down.
