Special character in mail header/MIME header/8-bit

I just started to look on the Horde Project with IMP as the goodie. I've
successfully setup the CVS-dist of Horde and it's modules. IMP running
against MS-Exchange IMAP, Courier-IMAP, vpopmail POP vchkpw. Neat solution.

The problem I encounter is when a recipient with an special character in
his/her name (like the norwegian å å) is sent a mail from the Compose
window > To/Cc/Bcc: field like this: Håvard <eibo@newmedia.no>

That recipient will never get the mail. With sendmail in place, it will
bounce back to the sender with:
 ----
The original message was received at Fri, 18 May 2001 13:05:48 +0200
from nobody@localhost

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
@
   (reason: 550 5.1.1 User unknown)

----- Transcript of session follows -----
550 5.1.1 @... User unknown
 ----

With qmails sendmail, I see in the logfile that it's sent to @FQDN (me is
appended).

Anyone got a tip for me what to do? Is it Horde/IMP or is it a part of PHP
that is not enabled?
