RH 7.1 and good php version for IMP/Horde?

Trying to install IMP 2.3.7...  PHP is giving me fits.  I can't seem to find a
combination that will compile correctly AND pass horde's/imp's tests.

OK, I've tried using the stock PHP with RH7.1, but fails the PEAR/RFC822 stuff
under horde/test.php (also mentions patching the src, but I just have the
bins).  I've tried d/l'ing source from PHP.net, but get the mxdriver problem. 
They say (PHP support) update to newest cvs snapshot (4.0.7cvs), but it goes
apesh$t on the htmlspecialchars() function.  I've tried  downloading php4.0.4
source from php and get the mxdriver compile problem just as in the 4.0.6
sources.  I even tried downloading some php rpms for 4.0.4 but just broke all
the other programs that depend on the provided rh php.

My question to the folks out there, what have you done to get horde/imp up and
running on your rh7.1 box?  Its late on Sat night, I shouldn't even be be at the
computer, but this is really getting to me.  Been staring at it too long, I
guess.

Any help, suggestions, would be cool.
