Just have two addressbooks - mark one public, one private, name them 
accordingly, and preset people's addressbook preferences in IMP to add to the 
private one and search both...

It's gone, it shouldn't be there. The preference should have gone away as well -
 is it still mentioned in your prefs.php file? Did you log out and log back in 
after updating?
