Try updating your PEAR installation.  Chuck made some
modifications to Mail/smtp.php that return more useful error
messages when the mail can't be sent.

AFAIK imp 2.3 supported sendmail since the beginning. At least the actual 
version does.
If you have a sendmail binary for postfix it should work perfectly.
