IMP 2.3 uses Turba for all of its contact management stuff.
In theory, someone could write a slimmer addressbook replacement
that integrates into the Horde registry (which is how IMP finds
its addressbook application), but that just seems like
unnecessary work to me.

Nope, no $conf['prefs'] entry in imp/config/conf.php or in any configuration
file in imp/config dir.
Any clue?

Yep, you'll need to use turba for this. Make sure to set turba to use a
local SQL source by adding this to turbas config/sources.php:
$cfgSources['localsql'] = array(
'title' => 'Local SQL',
'type' => 'sql',
'params' => array(
'phptype' => 'mysql',
'hostspec' => 'localhost',
'username' => 'hordemgr',
'password' => 'XXXXXXXXXXXX',
'database' => 'horde',
'table' => 'turba_objects'
),
'map' => array(
'__key' => 'object_id',
'__owner' => 'owner_id',
'name' => 'object_name',
'email' => 'object_email',
'homeAddress' => 'object_homeAddress',
'workAddress' => 'object_workAddress',
'homePhone' => 'object_homePhone',
'workPhone' => 'object_workPhone',
'cellPhone' => 'object_cellPhone',
'fax' => 'object_fax',
'title' => 'object_title',
'company' => 'object_company',
'notes' => 'object_notes'
),
'public' => false,
'readonly' => false,
'export' => true
);
You can find the database schema in turba/scripts/drivers/turba.sql
Also make sure that horde uses IMAP for authentication by adding this to
horde's config/horde.php:
$conf['auth']['driver'] = 'imap';
// An array holding any parameters that the Auth object will need to
// function correctly. For IMAP, this is the server name, port,
// protocol, etc.
$conf['auth']['params'] = array(
'server' => 'localhost',
'protocol' => 'imap',
'port' => 143,
'folder' => 'Mail/'
);
