Well, PHP 4.0.6 is only the latest stable release of PHP, that's right.
 The latest beta release of PHP is 4.0.7-rc<X> (dunno).

Anyhow, you don't need a beta PHP.  Go to http://snaps.php.net and
download the latest tarfile there.  You'll find a pear subdirectory
which you can then use.
