[imp] imp does not read ~HOME/mbox

Right.

David, that behavior of UW-IMAP (reading $HOME/mbox) depends on the "mbox"  
driver being enabled in imapd.  Red Hat disables that driver in their
RPMs, so if you're using the Red Hat 7.1 imap RPM, it won't work for you.  
You'll either have to rebuild from the SRPM or install UW-IMAP from
tarballs, configured how you like it.
