Configuring for POP

Can someone please walk me through the configuration process for POP?

I have tried using the web-based config, but it never seems to offer POP 
server options (only IMAP). I previously set the 'servtype' default to 
'pop3' in defaults.php3.dist. I tried editing the 'defaults.php3' file (to 
set 'servtype' to 'pop3' and editing the file servers.php3, but still no 
progress.

I could see previously that it was trying to connect to an IMAP server (my 
firewall rules trapped packets destined for port 143).

At this point, I am at a total loss to know how to proceed. The 
installation document only tells me that the files are well documented, but 
clearly I have missed a step somewhere.

P.S. I am not totally clueless, I was able to install and get 'nocc' 
working -- but it was far too slow. This involved a compile and install 
from source code of apache, php4 and nocc.
