I recently started experimenting with the relatively new feature SMTP AUTH in
sendmail (8.10 and higher) that enables a user to authenticate to sendmail
at login using CRAM-MD5 DIGEST-MD5 and a few other encryption mechanisms.
This is particularly useful for roaming users who need the ability to
relay mail through their usual mail server while they are connected
via some external ISP (ie Earthlink). The nicest part of this system
is that it allows a sysadmin to tighten up even further what relaying
sendmail will allow and is a major help in cutting down on both spam
and security risks.
A number of MUAs (Eudora, Pine 4.33, some others) have the capability of
sending in this type of authentication.
Are there any plans for IMP to add in this feature?
