gettext problem

Dear Guru

**** WARNING -- LIGHTLY OFF TOPIC MATTER **** FLAMES WILL BE IGNORED ****

I can't make gettext work on a Slackware Linux 8.0 (glibc 2.2.3 and
gettext-0.10.38).
As a consequence IMP does not translete to other languages besides english.
May be I did not install some required packages. The problem is that I do not
know what are the required packages to install - if any!.

Any soul to the rescue? Any gettext maintainer reading this?
