I can confirm this behaviour.
I use horde 2.01 + imp 3.01 (.rpm files) with Apache & SSL in a RH 7.2 box 
+ POP server and I had the same problem.
Changing:
$conf['compress_pages'] = true
to
$conf['compress_pages'] = false
in horde/config/horde.php
I *do* reproduce your results fixing the blank screen with the persistence 
of the sentence "Warning: Mailbox is empty (errflg=1) in Unknown on line 0".
