Not to beat a dead horse here ..... but just to be sure I understand.

Using the trash_folder preference as an example.  Although the value of the
trash folder can be set in this preference, this particular preference does
not provide any of the UI pieces...just storage of the result.  The UI piece
comes from somewhere else.  

Right?

BTW, where does the UI piece come from in this case?

Any preferences actually set by those interface elements should be of 
type 'implicit'. Implicit prefs just mean that they are never set by a 
standard UI element; other parts of the code set them. Examples are 
anything set by a 'special' pref, and also things like the sorting 
preferences, which are set when you change the sort direction or column.
