Ah, yes. To rephrase a bit/correct myself:
'special' preferences shouldn't actually have values; they should be used
for custom interface elements in the preferences UI (like the folder
select prefs, which have javascript to allow for new folders, etc.).
Any preferences actually set by those interface elements should be of
type 'implicit'. Implicit prefs just mean that they are never set by a
standard UI element; other parts of the code set them. Examples are
anything set by a 'special' pref, and also things like the sorting
preferences, which are set when you change the sort direction or column.
